Description

We are a merry band of misfits who putter around in a former haunted house on Brackett Avenue, Peaks Island.  Peaks has been our year-round home since 2012 when we pulled the crazy stunt of relocating from New London, Connecticut six months after we first set foot on the island.  In the past seven years, we have enjoyed a charmed existence and only found two things lacking on Peaks:

  • Ma-and-Pop-Restaurant style grinders (don’t even get us started on a rant about Maine “Italians”)
  • A bookstore

Since reading is like breathing for us and since nobody here even knows what a “grinder” is, we decided the easiest thing to remedy was the bookshop.  It’s still early, but we are hopeful to make Quay Words a permanent part of our Peaks community.  If you are interested in the details of our journey, be sure to check in on our blog and read further about our plans under “The Future” tab above.

“The Mary Read” is presently the lifeblood of Quay Words Bookshop. She is the transportation, advertisement board, and warehouse of our startup operation. She tirelessly carries her cargo of 100+ used books around the island for the people of Peaks’ enjoyment. Think of her wanderings and hours of operation like an ice cream truck – minus the music and the melting. In good weather, she goes where the wind takes her. She’s in business between the hours of 2 pm – 5 pm on weekdays and Captain’s choice on weekends. Check out our Facebook page.
