PEAKS ISLAND PLAYERS World Premiere of the musical play “SEABOUND”
At TEIA: Friday July 29, Saturday the 30th & Sunday the 31st
All performances 6:00 pm
Prophetic and thought-provoking, “Sea Bound,” a new musical play by Liz Rollins about love and responsibility makes its world premiere on Peaks Island the weekend of July 29 through July 31.
Phoenix Chorale Portland commissioned “Sea Bound” and designated Friends of Casco Bay as the
beneficiary of this production.
Rollins’s play in two acts features characters who are selkies, a grand subject of Gaelic literature and
lore. Selkies are bound to the sea, though at the seventh stream of the spring they can doff their
sealskin and don a human form. If their magical sealskin is stolen or lost, they walk the earth freely
but are ever its captive, unable to return to their true home.
“The mythical selkies, or Seal People, offer our human world an ideal example of peace and
harmony,” Rollins said. “The island fishermen and their families find themselves willingly
entangled in selkie relationships from which they cannot escape. Both sides experience
enlightenment because of their sacrifice.”
Set 75 years in the future, the play is rooted in centuries-old Scottish folklore but comments on the
current challenges faced by our island environment and oceans.
Rollins wrote “Sea Bound” for Peaks Island Players, a summer theater company she formed in
2015 at TEIA. Musicians and performers from Greater Portland complete a large, multigenerational cast of year-round Peaks Island residents and summer regulars.
Outdoor performances will be given on the grounds of TEIA, with the Diamond islands providing
a breathtaking backdrop in the evening light.
