Peaks is the largest of Portland’s islands and has substantially more year-round residents than the other city islands. It faces distinctive issues that differ from those of its mainland neighborhoods. Its relatively large population has led to the need for an elected body of representatives.
The Peaks Island Council was established by the City Council of Portland, Maine on July 17, 2007. Its major focus is to work closely with the City Council to address island issues, such as:
appropriate and effective mechanisms needed to bring our neighborhood issues to the attention of the city council for review and action.
The Peaks Island Council exists to provide a stronger voice to its residents on island issues and in city affairs.
