SUMMARY:5th Maine Annual Meeting and Talk on Abandon Ship! Mishaps and Maydays on Casco Bay
DESCRIPTION:Annual Meeting and Lecture by Curator Susan Hanley\nAbandon Ship!  Mishaps and Maydays on Casco Bay\nOur Annual Membership Meeting is this Thursday\, August 13 from 5pm to 8pm. Please RSVP here. A light supper will be served on the porch starting at 5:30pm\, followed by a “State of the Fifth Maine” update from the board. \nThen at 7pm\, we will move into the Memorial Hall for a presentation open to all. We are honored to present museum Trustee Susan Hanley as our speaker this year. \nThis season we are excited to open a new exhibit that focuses on shipwrecks and ship emergencies in Casco Bay. Ranging from the desperately tragic to the merely inconvenient\, these incidents help the visitor understand the dangers and complications of water travel before radar\, depth finders\, and other navigational aids made vessels safer. \nOur exhibit team has been hard at work all winter to tell the story of local shipwrecks—some famous\, some relatively unknown\, including one that happened on Peaks Island! How wrecks resulted in improvements in navigational aids or regulations is woven into the narrative. Hands-on elements add fun to the experience! \nCongratulations and thanks go out to our exhibit team: \nGuest Curator: Susan Hanley\nExhibit Designer: Eric Eaton\nProject Manager: Holly Hurd-Forsyth \nThis exhibit is generously\nsponsored by Island Lobster Co.

SUMMARY:5th Maine Opening and Re-inactment
DESCRIPTION:Fifth Maine Museum is pleased to announce its opening event for the 2026 season on Saturday\, May 23\, featuring live Civil War reenactment events by Company A\, 3rd Maine Regiment Volunteer Infantry\, Maine’s largest Civil War reenacting organization. \nHeld on the grounds of the historic Fifth Maine Museum\, Company A will present historically informed musket demonstrations and a Civil War campsite simulation. In addition to the reenactments\, the museum will host a community cookout with burgers and vegetarian options starting at 12:00 PM. \nVisitors are invited to enjoy a relaxed meal on the Fifth Maine Museum’s famous wraparound veranda\, featuring breathtaking ocean views. This event is co-sponsored by American Legion Post 142. \nThis event also arrives during a significant national moment\, as 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The Fifth Maine Museum offers a unique opportunity to reflect on this anniversary through the lens of Maine’s role in shaping American history and the enduring legacy of those who served. Built on Peaks Island in 1888\, the Fifth Maine Museum preserves the history of the Fifth Maine Regiment and offers visitors insight into Civil War life and Peaks Island history. The opening event marks the beginning of the museum’s seasonal programming\, which will include the launch of an immersive audio tour\, a new exhibit\, and special events throughout the summer. \n Veterans will be admitted free to the museum throughout Memorial Day weekend. Active military admission is always free. All proceeds from donations and food sales will go towards veterans’ programs. \n Reenactment demonstrations are free; food is $11; museum admission is $10 per person\, $25 for the whole family. Ages 10 and under get in free. Veteran admission to the museum is free all weekend. \n \n
